Stainless steel 316L tubing consists of an austenitic stainless steel with chromium, nickel, and molybdenum in its composition and a carbon content below 316 grade. The low carbon content of the tubing makes it easier to weld for applications. 316L stainless steel tubing is used in aqueous applications with high chloride ion corrosion. Due to the presence of molybdenum, the material has a low corrosion rate in chloride ion rich environments. Available in welded, seamless and assembled tubing.
Type 316/ 316L/316H is an austenitic stainless steel for applications requiring high strength, toughness and workability, as well as enhanced corrosion resistance. Compared to 304 stainless steel, 316 contains a higher percentage of molybdenum (Mo 2% to 3%) and nickel (Ni 10% to 14%), and molybdenum provides better overall corrosion resistance, particularly pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. 316 has excellent toughness and mechanical properties at sub-zero temperatures and is available in cold rolled, continuous rolled sheet and plate rolled sheet forms in thicknesses ranging up to 60 inches.
316L pipe has a minimum yield strength of 205 MPa and a minimum tensile strength of 515 MPa. These pipes can also operate at temperatures up to 870 degrees C.
