Seamless tubes are made by repeatedly drawing and forging hollow bars through a series of smaller dies. No welding is performed at all during this process, avoiding microscopic changes in the tube grain structure.
Certain applications require seamless stainless steel tubing to perform critical functions. Typically, seamless tubing is required for petrochemical, natural gas or nuclear applications that are often subjected to high pressures and exposed to corrosive environments, or if the tube walls are too thick to be rolled and welded.
